The Arena is a solid structure built of reinforced steel floors, bearing walls and beams. It contains a hall for events, with a foyer out front and service areas.

The options for utilizing the 5,500 m² of floor space are varied, with a stage that can be positioned as needed and adjusted to the required size. LED strip and directional lights under the cantilevered roof illuminate the outer façade of the hall in the dark.

Maximum security and functional reliability were demanded when building the Arena. The wide variety of utilization options necessitated a customized fire protection concept. One of the special challenges were the customized solutions for fire resistant doors in the outer area. The requirements for escape and evacuation routes are extremely strict when thousands of people congregate.

Originally, all of the fire resistant doors were supposed to be made of sheet steel. In practice however, this proved impossible in light of the difficult ratio of width to height of the doors. As an experienced system provider, Novoferm was able to come up with a customized solution to the problem in the shape of a made-to-measure aluminium tubular frame door that was exactly suited to the property. It provided a safe solution to the problematic door size while offering exactly the same functional performance.

Fire resistant doors that perform a dual function
All of the outer doors in the escape tunnels perform a dual function. Fitted with swing door operators and smoke detectors, their smoke extraction function ensures they are opened automatically by a central controller in the event of a fire with smoke development. To ensure reliable performance of this function even if the power is cut off in the event of a fire, they have their own separate battery and panic function. The combination of these complex customized solutions ensure the success of the innovative fire protection concept in the Arena. Novoferm, one of Europe’s leading system suppliers of doors, garage doors, frames and operators, demonstrated its ability to provide all the equipment needed for fire resistant and multifunctional doors in the EmslandArena.

A total of 392 Novoferm doors were installed. On this challenging project, Novoferm proved its ability to provide not just integrated solutions tailored to individual requirements but also innovative design solutions.

Building specification
A venue in a class of its own – that is the new ISS Dome. The futuristic building is striking, the technical equipment (especially the climate control and lighting technology) is innovative, and the flexible utilization options are manifold. The floor space of 1,800 m² meets international requirements for sports competitions. The auditorium can be modified for cultural or business events within eight hours. The ISS Dome has excellent traffic connections and can accommodate up to 13,400 guests.

Design
The ISS Dome unites modern architecture with exceptional functional utility. Most of the hall is clad with a metal façade that traces the organic shape of the building.

Some of the façade is semi-transparent while other areas with louvres add striking highlights. Foil roofs ensure good light conditions. A glass structure was chosen for the façade surrounding the entrance. One thousand tonnes of truss girders were installed in the aluminium clad roof alone.

A total of 58 double fire resistant door units separate the inner area from the business zone surrounding it. These so-called “mouth hole doors” can let up to 13,400 audience members pass through very quickly.

They are fitted with fast-acting panic handlebars on the inside in case of emergencies.

The archery competitions at the 2012 Summer Olympics took place in Lilleshall, UK. An adjacent hall was built that included Novoferm products. The hall not only offered a dry haven for participants; it also helps to assure the general safety of athletes, referees and spectators.

The Astana ice skating stadium can hold 8.900 spectators and was built for the 2011 Asian Winter Games. It is suitable for races over both long and short distances, and for ice hockey matches.

The Astana Stadium is a multifunctional arena in the Kazakh capital Astana. The stadium was built in 2009 and can accommodate 30,000 spectators. Although the stadium roof is usually closed, it can be opened if needed. The venue is mainly used for home matches of the Kazakh national football squad and the local football team "Lokomotive Astana".
